Stefanía Arteaga

Stefanía is an organizer and strategist who has played a crucial role in advancing immigrants’ rights organizing in North Carolina. She has co-founded the grassroots immigrants rights, group Comunidad Colectiva and the Carolina Migrant Network. For years she has worked to push back the tide of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local law enforcement collaboration to stop the deportation pipeline. Stefania is originally from San Salvador, El Salvador but has lived in North Carolina the majority of her life and considers herself a Southerner. She spent years organizing with undocumented students, deportation defense campaigns, and toward the successful end of 287(g) in Mecklenburg County, NC. She was a protagonist in the Netflix docu-series Immigration Nation which aired in 2020.

    Oversees the administrative and fundraising aspects of the organization as well as policy and organizing campaigns.

  • Jan. 2019 - Nov. 202

    Provided support to statewide partners to combat anti-immigrant bills, including logistics support for actions, legislative education, and development of campaign materials and strategies.

  • Nov. 2016 - Oct. 2022

    Co-led campaigns to end Mecklenburg County, NC’s 12-year-old 287(g) agreement in 2018. Collaborated to build the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office detainer policy.

  • July 2019 - Dec 2020

    Through the All For NC Fellowship, Arteaga received seed funding to begin working on the foundation fo the Carolina Migrant Network to provide pro-bono legal representation to immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  • Oct. 2017 - Dec. 2018

    Coordinated and provided North and South Carolina's DHHS ORR site for Legal Orientation for Custodians of Unaccompanied Children (LOPC).
